Basic but comfortable character Inn within the old city walls. Old paintings, antiques and rugs amidst variously upholstered furnishings make for a comfortable old world feel in this most ancient of towns – albeit a rather Disney-fied one. But the rooms are generally small except for some at the end of the walled garden – with heavy décor, somewhat overdecorated yellow/orange paint effect walls and patterned carpets – and groups are often accommodated, so choose the main building and not the Ramparts annex, and avoid high season – which goes for the rest of Carcassonne. But as one of the earliest Best Westerns in France (1982), the family character wins out.
