Now managed by a Hong Kong native, the Hospes Lancaster Hotel’s 18th-century French décor and Louis XV and XVI furniture have been tempered by the luxury hotel’s Oriental style. An Alice in Wonderland sitting room complete with chess tables and stylised chairs looks out onto a Japanese style garden. Unsurprisingly, this impeccable attention to detail and discrete service in such elegant and comfortable surroundings have led this luxury hotel to become a favourite with the rich and famous, including Noel Coward, King Umberto, Ewan McGregor and Greta Garbo.
The facilities
Next door, the newly opened three Michelin star restaurant, run by the legendry Michel Troisgros opens up the famously private Lancaster to a new clientele. The rooms are luxuriously furnished in traditional style, with plush carpets and heavy themed fabrics complementing period furniture. The marble bathrooms are mirrored and spacious. Fresh flowers and the luxury hotels own line of scent, “Contemporel” are small examples of the exacting attention to detail. A small rooftop gym is available as is a meeting room or private dining room.
The rooms
The luxury hotel has classic rooms that provide all the most up-to-date logistical services that guests expect: all rooms offer two telephone lines, voice mail service, a safe, a TV/DVD player, and cable and satellite TV. Most of the bathrooms combine grey or beige marble and African iroko wood. The luxury bathroom fixtures, the heated towel bars and all the accessories display a retro design. Towels, bathrobes and slippers are also designed uniquely for the luxury hotel. The legendary suites are a major attraction, one named after Marlene Dietrich, who lived in it for three years, decorated to her taste in lilac with a huge sitting room sporting two marble fireplaces.
