The Hotel Writes
Jnane Tamsna, in the heart of Marrakech's, famed palm grove, is the latest creation of Meryanne Loum-Martin. After having created Dar Tamsna in 1989, then Ryad Tamsna in 1999, she was determined to return to the rural ambience of the Palmeraie for her new project. With the help of her husband Dr. Gary J. Martin - an American ethnobotanist - she designed a Moorish country house which celebrates vernacular architecture and the rural landscapes of the Palmeraie.
Date palms, olive trees and grapevines create an oasis atmosphere in the midst of spontaneous vegetation on vast plains and rolling hills surrounding the estate. Extensive fruit orchards and vegetable gardens provide fresh produce for Jnane Tamsna's Moroccan-Mediterranean cuisine. Inside, the architecture is structured around two courtyard gardens filled with fragrant white-flowered plants.
Jnane Tamsna consists of two houses within a walled garden to rent individually or in exclusivity: Jnane House and Moussafir House. All rooms have central heating and an ensuite. All beds can be turned into twin beds except the four poster bed in the Celadon room. There are two pools and one clay surface tennis court. Jnane House has 10 rooms next to the large pool in a spacious private garden. Moussafir house has 5 suites with easy access to a smaller lap pool and a private garden, and each of the suites has its own television, DVD player and stereo. Guests can enjoy all gardens and both pools, except when one of the houses is rented in exclusivity. Situated in an adobe-walled estate of 15 acres, its capacity can be augmented by other houses on the property. In all, 32 double rooms are available in four large homes, each with its own guest pavilion and swimming pools.
A stay at Jnane Tamsna offers you cultural experiences to satiate your spirit, healthy living to restore your body, and intellectual discoveries to stimulate your mind. In excursions to the Medina and the countryside discover vernacular architecture, garden history, and initiatives of cultural and ecological restoration. When you return home to Jnane Tamsna, rejuvenate yourself against the backdrop of the High Atlas mountains with massage, aromatherapy and organic cuisine.

What our clients have said
| We are back from a fantastic trip to Marrakech. Many thanks for your help with our hotel accomodation - both hotels were fantastic. Jnane Tamsna was wonderful, the accomodation and hotel grounds were beautiful and incredibly quiet and relaxing. The service there is fabulous - the staff were very attentive. I would say the only downside of the hotel was the food arrangements there - while the food was fantastic, all meals were on a set menu (which was no problem) although there was not even a menu for you to find out what you were going to eat... on the first day we asked 3 members of staff what we could eat for lunch, before the Head Chef finally came out to help us! | ||

| Jnane Tamsna was nice and the staff couldn’t do enough for us (but had to wait to be asked!) - it felt a bit like all of the staff had just started working there the day before! Our room was very pleasant although we had to move room as the air-con in our first room didn’t work – not a massive problem but a bit of a pain. The only real disappointment (but a really significant one) was that we weren’t allowed in the main hotel as it had been totally booked out by one group. The main part of the hotel is the one you see in all the pictures with the amazing architecture, colours and atmosphere. Probably the main reason most (definitely me anyway) choose to stay here. That was a real shame! But in summary, I’d go back as the staff were great, but only if I could stay in the main hotel. My husband however absolutely loved it and noticed none of the above! | ||

| Thank you for recommending Jnane Tamsna and all your help. It really is a wonderful relaxing hotel the rooms and décor are amazing as is the service. My boyfriend was unfortunately ill one day due to a bug from the beginning of the holiday but the hotel staff were great and very helpful. The only thing we were slightly disappointed in was there was only one pool clean to use the big pool was still dirty (due to the storm) when we left but other than that PERFECT. I spoke to them regarding weddings and they showed me some pictures and will be sending me a cd. Thanks again it was definitely the right choice and a perfect end to 3 weeks travelling in Marrakech. I look forward in using Travel Intelligence in the future. | ||

| Thank you so much for your recommendation of Jnane Tamsna, it was really lovely, we will definitely go back. The only niggle was that the pool was super cold, other than that it was all wonderful. | ||

| We recently returned from a most spectacular holiday in Marrakech. Joanna arranged our flights and she organized our lodging at the wonderful riad Jnane Tamsna. She organized trips into the souk, hammams, golf, and dinners. She also arranged a day trip to a Berber market and a visit to the Kasbah du Toubkal for an unforgettable lunch in breathtaking surroundings. We thoroughly enjoyed everything. My husband and I had been to Marrakech before, but never was it quite so enjoyable. It can only be because we had none of the organizational headaches. That, in our view is what a holiday should be all about. We are two very satisfied customers! | ||

| We stayed at Jnane Tamsna in September 2003. The service is unbelievable with the staff seemingly able to anticipate when you wake and go to sleep. Breakfast was served outside our beautiful room every morning at our requested time. Dinners were long and superb up at the main house. Pool was much needed respite as it was extremely hot (100-110 degrees). Hospitality abounds. However, if you plan on communicating via Internet or even phone, don't. The rooms don't have phone, TV or internet. For a very relaxing holiday where you don't have to think about anything as all is handled by Jnane Tamsna, then go ahead and book a stay. Definitely book a day trip to the Atlas Mountains or longer. | ||

| This is modern, where the Riads are old. But it still has bags of character, thanks to its stunning modern design. It also has a clay tennis court, beautiful swimming pools, stunning gardens, and space. Which most Riads don't. It was very relaxing, and the food was the best we had in Marrakech - all the vegetables were grown in the gardens of the hotel. Better food, in fact, than the vaunted Yacout or Dar Moha. It is outside Marrakech, so you need to get a taxi in, but it can be good to get away from the dust and noise of the city, particularly when you're coming back to this place. | ||

| The hospitality from Gary and Meryanne Lou Martin, at the Jnane Tamsna was fantastic. If you haven't visited the Jnane, I would strongly suggest that you make time. It is truly beautiful, with impecible service. The scents, the food, the décor and attention to detail delights every sense. It certainly made the right impression to my new wife! I will definitley return, and hope to keep in contact with Gary and Meryanne, as they were so kind and hospitable. | ||

Joanna Monkhouse's Review of Jnane Tamsna
What makes Morocco unique in terms of accommodation is the profusion of maison d’hôtes – guest houses – run by owners who have a genuine love of the country and want their guests to discover and share in it. Interior designer Meryanne Loum-Martin and her husband, ethnobotanist Gary Martin, offer this personal service in Marrakech with Jnane Tamsna, a luxury riad in the Palmeraie.
The facilities
Guests of this luxury resort gather before dinner every evening in the main salon where they can either keep to themselves or chat to the owners and fellow guests. A mixture of low backed chairs and sofas invite conversation. Fires roar in winter, and music is always faintly present in the background. Jnane Tamsna does have a television room for desperados but it is rarely used. A breezy outside salon provides white cushioned low level seating. Most of the food served at this luxury resort comes from the organic vegetable gardens or the farm project outside Marrakech.
Jnane Tamsna has a pale blue pool for each of the three houses – long, thin and unadorned – surrounded by sun loungers with shocking pink towels that complement the blue sky, green plants and sandy coloured walls of the house. A tennis court is available for active guests (lessons can be arranged) and the three Marrakechi golf courses are each a fifteen minute drive away.
The rooms
The chic, simple Tamsna style is a blend of traditional Moroccan techniques with a modern twist. The 15 rooms at this luxury resort are divided between Jnane House (ten) and Maison des Voyageurs - Moussafir (five), a separate building available to be rented whole or as individual rooms, plus the two latest additions on the ground floor of Dar Ylane, the owners' house which also houses a spacious and elegant sitting room and a boutique showcasing Loum-Martin's designs. The rooms in the main house are spread over the two levels and lead through tall wooden doors and arches off the verdant courtyard. The fragrant plants create a calming atmosphere at Jnane Tamsna, as does the wall fountain.
Simplicity, not minimalism is the feeling at this luxury resort – rooms are furnished with a large bed (or twins), a chaise lounge, table, chair, fireplace, framed photos or paintings, a mirror and a vase of freshly picked flowers. There are no phones in the rooms nor minibars nor televisions. Heavy linen curtains frame the view through the arched doorways out on the terraces or gardens. Some rooms at Jnane Tamsna are bright and colourful, others are more sober – each has a theme yet the overall style is harmonious. A mix of old and new is found in the bathrooms with tadelakt walls and floors, double basins and fast-filling western baths. The Tamsna herbal bath oil, shampoo etc is available to buy so you can close your eyes, breathe deeply and pretend you’re still there once you’ve reluctantly departed.
