Travel Light: Useful Backpack Packing Tips

Almost 80% of Americans plan to travel at some point in 2022. If you’re one of them and you’re trying to keep things light and simple, why not pack everything into a backpack?

Okay, I know what you’re thinking. How will I fit everything I need in my backpack? The truth is, these tips may not work for you if you’re heading out on a long excursion, but backpacks are perfect for weekend trips.

So, what backpack packing tips should you test out for your next quick trip? How can you fit everything you need into a single bag?

Read on to learn how to pack for travel using just a backpack.

Keep Clothes in the Main Compartment

Start by packing your clothing into the main compartment of your backpack. Give them a rolled fold to save space.

Whenever possible, cut down on how many items of clothing you need to bring. For example, if you can get away with wearing the pants you’re flying in for the rest of the trip, that’s going to save you a lot of space!

Keep Electronics in the Safest Compartments

Almost all modern-day backpacks include a computer sleeve at the back of the main compartment. Keep your laptop in this sleeve, preferably in an additional case.

Make sure that your other electronics are easy to access but unlikely to fall out. If you have room, the front pocket is great for your Kindle or your iPod as long as it zips up. You should also consider buying waterproof backpacks to protect your electronics from unexpected spills.

Pack Toiletries in the Front

Remember that when you’re traveling by plane with a carry-on bag, you’re going to have to rely on mini toiletries. That means mini bottles of shampoo, conditioner, lotion–anything that’s liquid or semi-liquid needs to be in 3.4-ounce bottles or smaller.

The good news is that means you can fit all of your toiletries into a small travel bag. This should fit nicely into the front pocket, where it will be easy to remove when going through the TSA security line.

Pack ID and Documents in the Side

If your backpack has a hip pocket or strap pocket that you can reach with the backpack on, consider using it to hold your ID, tickets, and other important documents. This will give you quick access to them as you make your way through the airport. If this isn’t an option, the smallest pocket will do, as this will at least make them easy to find.
