Bahamas Blogs: Is Eleuthera a Touristy Place?

The Bahamas are one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet. People flock from all four corners of the globe to take in the beautiful beaches and turquoise waters.

However, some people prefer to go off the beaten track and find the areas less frequented by tourists. One of these areas is Eleuthera.

Let’s take a closer look at this more secluded side of the Bahamas.

Geography of Eleuthera

The name Eleuthera refers to two things. The first is the long and narrow main island, which lies around 50 miles east of the Bahamian capital of Nassau. The name also refers to the smaller islands that surround the main island.

These smaller islands are Harbour Island, Windermere Island, Current Island, and Man Island.

The main island is split into three primary areas. North Eleuthera is where you’ll find Harbour Island. It’s also where you can find Spanish Wells. Spanish Wells is an area known for its swimming pigs.

Central Eleuthera is where you can find the administrative center of Governer’s Habour. Finally, there is the more secluded South Eleuthera area when you can take in the peaceful atmospheres of Rock Sound and Lighthouse Beach.

How to Get There

How you get to Eleuthera depends on how you want to structure your trip. If you’re already going to be in Nassau, you can take a short flight over to one of the area’s three airports.

You can catch flights out of most major airports to Eleuthera if you’re coming from the US. These flights will often come with a layover somewhere in Florida. From either Miami or Fort Lauderdale, the flight time is around 2 hours.

When to Visit

Eleuthera is a fantastic place to visit all year round, so the timing of your visit depends on what you’re looking for and what your budget is.

The peak season is December to April, and this is when prices will be at their highest. The area is always one of the quieter places in the Bahamas, but the best time to go is between March and August if you’re after total serenity.

Once you get there, you’ll have so much to do. Check out some of the amazing Eleuthera real estate, or do any of these activities to fill your time.

Getting Around

The best way to get around the island is by car. It doesn’t take long to get from one end of the island to another, and Eleuthera car rentals are reasonably priced.

Car rentals tend to be a more relaxed affair between friends, and it’s unlikely that you’ll be unable to find a car to get you around the island during your stay.

A More Authentic Bahamian Experience

So that’s Eleuthera–quiet, serene, affordable. Eleuthera Bahamas is not like the rest of the Bahamas. You can find a place to escape all the tourists and experience a slice of true Bahamian life.

There’s so much to do in this fascinating and vibrant area of the Bahamas. You’re guaranteed to have an amazing time here.
